Changing the Item Category Structure

Hello Everyone,

Has anyone experienced changing the structure of item category, the requirement is that our client wants to restructure the item categories, currently they are using a single segment but now they are interested two have their categories in two segments like major and minor, and they want to use it this way across all the functional areas.

Can anyone share his/her experience in this regard.
