What is the chief difference between Enforce Due Date [EDD] and unconstrained plans?

What is the chief difference between Enforce Due Date [EDD] and unconstrained plans?    We have heard we can get some added exception messages with EDD plans but when I run them in our test instance they take more than twice as long.   Is there more going on here?   What differences should I look for in the resulting plans?
