RMAN backups corrupt - not endian conversion

 I'm seeing the following trying to duplicate from a copy of production to a test server running the same version of MS Windows (2008 R2). 
This was last known to work in November when we were on 10.2.0.5. 

We're now on 11.2.0.3 and backups were created using that version. 

failover to previous backup

channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: starting datafile backup set restore
channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: restoring control file
channel ORA_AUX_DISK_1: reading from backup piece \\HALLA\ORACLE\CONTROLFILE_AUTOBACKUP\C-4109297297-20121210-02.RMAN
