Can I refresh ebus db from prod to test without going through a full clone of app server?

we run 2 tiers in dev/test/prod.  all dbs are 9.2.0.8 on solaris 10, all ebus are 11.5.10.1 on intel.  I have done research and we don't meet clone requriements so would require patching before I could do a clone.  Can I cheat by just refreshing db from prod to test with rman backup/restore?  I am pretty sure the answer is no, that we have to do a full clone of app server along with db backup/restore, but i need you to confirm please
