GSS on 11i before Upgrade to R12

Hi All,
Need a clarification on GSS to be run on 11i EBS Instance before initiating R12 Upgrade.

Can we perform GSS on 11i EBS 2/3 days prior to initiating the preupgrade steps(tuns utility,preupgrade patches) and then proceed to R12 Upgrade. Does this have any effect on upgrade or Do we need to run GSS  mandatorily after pre upgrade steps.
