"Groups for a Resource" while adding resources for a Territory in R12

 Hi All,

Can anyone say if the Group that we give while adding a resource to the territory signifies anything.
In 11i this Group for a resource is not mandatory whereas in R12, for all the existing upgraded resources, the groups came as null but for the new resources that are being added its asking for a group.
Can we give any group name associated to that resource there..?..
