In the United States of America, the Internal Revenue Service issued a new regulation for Medical Device Excise Tax (MDET) effective January 1, 2013. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which was enacted on March 30, 2010, contained a provision for a 2.3 percent excise tax on the sale of any medical device by a manufacturer, producer, or importer. This document discusses approaches to handle MDET using existing functionality in Oracle E-Business Tax.

The purpose of the document is to outline a high level interpretation of some of key requirements of the MDET requirements and provide a general solution approach on how these can be addressed using standard functionality within E-Business Tax. This document neither intends to provide any tax advice nor can be used as a basis for meeting all tax requirements.
