Can we lock down Work Order Numbering

Our eAM application was configured to automatically create the work order number by tabbing through the work order field.  Recently we had a situation where an employee manually entered a work order number and it caused confusion for the other employees.  Is there a way to lock down the work order field to allow only system generated numbers?
