Oracle Alerts

Is there any reason I should not use an Oracle alert?  It would be a periodic alert running 2 times a day

we are on 11.5.10, upgrading to R12 in the near future

I have heard from some people that I should not use an alert, that Oracle says not to use them, they are bad etc. but they don't seem to have any fact to back any of that up.  I guess I don't see the difference in running an alert vs running a concurrent program twice a day that would execute the exact same query

Just looking for some feedback if this is a myth or not
