Is it necessary to install a Desktop Environtment (GNOME or KDE) on an Oracle Enterprise Linux datab

Is it strictly necessary or is it not recommended?.
I was wondering because I supose the desktop environment will consume hardware resources and I think all you need to visualize the database installation screens is just X Windows System.
