Why is my database switching redo logs so often - is it dataguard related?

We have a few databases in archive mode, and all behave as you would expect with regards to redo logs, and when they switch.

However, we have one particular database, that is using data guard, and the dataguard aspect is causing us a few issues - it keeps on getting out of synch.  one area I'm currently investigating is the frequency of the log switches.

The redo logs are sized at 50Mb each, but regularly, it will switch several times an hour when only in the region of 25-50Kb.  I could understand more if it was consistent, but sometime it will go for large periods without switching at all.
