Extensive Use of Profiles

Lately it seems the Database administrators who are working to resolve performance issues inside my team seem to rely on Oracle profiles to solve the issues.  I am curious as to what others see as the pros and cons of this.

 

I think it is just a Band-Aid masking an underlying issue.  Is Oracle’s optimizer that bad that it cannot select an adequate plan?  When I speak to other platforms it seems oracle has a real shortcoming with its query optimization compared to SQL Server or DB2.

 

Would like to hear others opinions.
