Information about creating Donated Assets (original cost=zero)

Hi,
Can you please let me know where can i found information about donated assets? Assets can be created with original cost equal to zero, and after saving the asset, i can update the current cost to another value. This procedure is possible on asset workbench form, is this procedure supported?
