AWR/ADDM advice for increasing SGA size

The database is Oracle 10.2.0.4 (a colleague is working on the 11g upgrade).  The database server is SPARC 64 Solaris 5.10.  The current values of sga_max_size is 245G and sga_target is 240G.  ADDM has recommended changing sga_target to 300G.  I have attempted to do this before, and I get an "out of memory" when starting the database.  The server has 512G available to oracle, so I don't see why the startup gets an out of memory error.  The situation has become a bit more acute in that AWR and ADDM both reflect latch library cache issues, which is a shared
