JRE 1.7 version plug in with Desktop JRE 1.6 version

HI,

As part of our oracle applications upgrade we will be upgrading JRE plug in. Our JRE in desktop client is Java 6 edition i.e. 1.6.0_xx. Can we upgrade the JRE in sever to 1.7.0_xx version?. Is JRE 1.7.0_xx version in SERVER compatible with JRE 1.6.0_xx version in DESKTOP ?
