Math functions using fields

I have a field that has the correct output with <?(Quantity_Shipped)*(AmtPricePerUnit)?> as the syntax.

But when I want to sum up all those outputs with a total from the above function, the following syntax does not work.  I get the same output as the first function.  Why?  What do I need to correct it?

<?sum((Quantity_Shipped)*(AmtPricePerUnit))?>
