Adding ASM disk to the disk group

I have a small doubt.I was told not to add any size other than the existing LUNs. for example, if all the existing disks are using 100GB LUNs, we are not supposed to add any other size disks to that disk group.  Is it because we need of ASM re balance operation?
what happens if different sized disk is added to that disk group. Please suggest.
