adding journal category

I need to add a journal category and that isn't a problem, I know how to do that. However all the journal categories in this system are connected to a numeric category key. I don't know what the category key is used for and I also need to know if I need to go somewhere else in the system to add a numeric key. It seems they are grouped by number for a reason and I don't know what it is?
