FRA Grows very large

 Hi, We have a database we were migrating to use Dataguard and after setup, the system FRA started growing very large, upwards of a terabyte. 
Can anyone explain why this is occurring ? 
WIndows 2008 Server and 11gR2. 

I was not directly involved so I do not have many details. I am just looking for what may cause this type of reaction.
