Intermittent network connection problem

Hi,
Please help me in troubleshooting and isolating the network problem  in my Sun Fire x4270 with Red Hat OS installed. What steps and procedure can i do to determine the problem? How to check nic problem in linux? The current setup is the server has capable of 10/100/1000mbps and connected to the switch which is 100mbps:
