Workflow field update for "Account Contact" record not possible; only Ids can be updated on this acc

Hi,How come we can't update any "account contact" field value thru workflow? Only the rowids of the associated customer & contacts can be updated which does not make sense at all! I created a new custom field on this object but it is not showing on the list of fields I can update thru workflow. Maybe it's one of these cases where you have to wait the following day to see the change?
