What if I dont qualify a segment as intercompany segmet

 can anyone tell me specifically the pros/cons of having a separate "Intercompany" segment in the chart of accounts?
I have intercompany segment in my chart of accounts but I dont want to qualify that segment as intercompany.

This is an upgrade from 11.5.9 to 12.1.3.  The intercompany segment in my COA is not using the same value set as balancing segment.  We do not want to change the segment as it leads to Reimplementation.

Can any one suggest me what happens if I dont qualify the segment as intercompany as this is an optional setup.
