How can I change owner of IB instance to internal party programmatically?

 I am attempting to update the owner of an IB instance from an external party to the internal party programmatically.  I've changed owner from external to another external using the public API procedure update_item_instance before but I'm having trouble changing external to internal since that procedure requires a party account record.  The internal party does not (nor is required to) have a party account.  The inventory transaction (an RMA Receipt) will have already occurred.  Does anyone know how to change from external to internal party programmatically?
