PAY: Balance Questions

 Hello,
I want to know that why do we make balances? If we are making an Earnings element than we add it in Gross Pay or Total Earnings, thats understandable but if we define any earning or similarly any deduction element than what is the need to make it's own balance as well as include it in Gross Pay or Total Earnings also. Are those balances use in any payroll processes.

Please guide.
