Shipping part of an assembly

Hi

Currently we are trying to explore options on how we can accomplish the following:

Say we added an assembly item to our Sales Order. However; only portion of that assembly needs to ship as it is ready. What would be different ways we can do this? Can we just enter the components that are ready as additional Sales Order Lines and ship them. How would this affect Inventory and what would happen when all other components of the assembly are ready as well and can be shipped. Can we ship the assembly?

How doee the KIT Item functionality work or what other Oracle standard functionality can be leveraged to accomplish this?
