Elimination : Is it mandatory to have an intercompany segment in the key flexfield

Hi all,
We are in a project of EBS migration from 11i to R12. 
While implementing the consolidation function for a group of companies. We created a consolidation Ledger, we faced a difficulty of elimination of the intercompany movements.. Knowing that none of our Key flexfield segments has an intercompany semgment qualifier.
Is it mandatory to have an intercompany segment in the Key flexfield?
