Unable to see custom object 1 records

I am using Custom Object 1.  I've enabled the role to allow the user to have access to ALL records.  I haven't noticed any specific privledges needed.  The user can create records for the Custom Object, but can't see any of the records in the lists.  The lists are set to All Records I can See and again, i gave the users role access to ALL records.  Why can't he see the records he or anyone else creates?  If it matters, I am using Books for other objects, but didn't think it necessary here as this particular object is specific
