Notifications building on user notifications tab, can admin delete?

Our users tend to let notifications build up on their notifications tab.  Other than having the user delete these notifications, is there a way for the administrator to delete these or otherwise control/reduce the quantity.
When notifications tab is their homepage, with large quantities of notifications it slows down the homepage from loading.
