storing symbolic url in a variable

Experts,
            I  am trying to call a URL from symbolic URL through  showpop up meesagge method,,it works,,,but whern its comes to OPEN ui, thats not working becoz open ui method,,didnt support in Open UI. so i am trying to use window.open method,, i am not sure how to call a symbolic url through windwo.open method.
so i was thinking to store the symbolic url in a profile attribute and pass that prof attribute in windows.open () method.
Is there any way i can store the symbolic url in a variable ?
