Tell me about the olr file

The local registry file in my $gridhome/cdata directory is being updated.  I assume those updates are coming from the cluster's ocr file.
How is the refresh done by oracle?  What's going on behind the scenes?

We recently had a zero-bit olr file that we restored from a copy created, apparently, during the initial cluster creation.  I assume the root.sh script created that backup in a host-named subdirectory in the cdata directory.

Where does this backup copy come from?  Does it ever get updated?
