Incremental Repository Merge (8.1.1.10) Complete in Dev - Now What?

The IRM is finally complete in Dev.  Working on getting the repository reimported so a full compile can be completed. (Another manual process, apparently.)
So, does the IRM have to be completed in Test and Production?  I can't see taking multiple days to complete a production upgrade!  Is there a process being developed for loading the seed data after an IRM is complete, the repository has been migrated and schema changes applied?

I have not found anything regarding steps for IRM in Test and Production in the Best Practices, Maintenance Release Guide nor in the Database Upgrade Guide.
