"Null" error when "Component Of" and "Connected To" instance relationship are created for the same

Can anyone tell me if there are any patches to fix an error that occurs when an instance that belongs to a "Component Of" (Subject to Object) and "Connect To" (Bi Directional) relationship type and one or the other relationships is attempted to be Expired?
I noticed a bug fix that indicated when two Subject to Object relationships were attempted for the same instance, then a warning would appear that prevents the relationship an I have seen that work.  We need to be able to create a Bi directional "Component of" relationship for instances that also have "Component Of" relationships with other instances, so we want to continue to allow his to happen.  However, becuase of various bugs we are encountering in the instance relationships it is possible that an instance is in both relationships with the same instance mistakenly.  When we try to expire
