Next Order Status - Advanced Preference 24

Has anyone had success configuring Advanced Preference 24 for Next Order Status?

I had the Basic Next Order status preference working to override the order activity rules at order entry time.  But then I tried to configure the Advanced Preference 24 to override next status at Ship Confirm and now nothing is working in terms of preferences.

Can the Basic Preferences and the Advanced Preferences work together?  According to the documentation, it seems that they can.

If anyone has any tips or insights on how to set this up, please let me know.
