Edit Field Validation for Account field in Service Request Record Type

We need a way to validate that the Account Field is populated if the Status is set to 'Closed" but when we go into the field setup for Cases, the Account field has the Field Validation field as read only. The field itself is NOT read only.
Anyone know why that is and if there is a way to do some sort of validation on it?

We tried do Field Validation on fields that populated from the Account using workflow but ran into other roadblocks on those.
