Opportunity Sales Stage set Text field to Required

I've been trying to figure out whether or not a workflow can be created that will set a Text field (short) to Required when a Sales Stage on an Opportunity is set to Close/Won or Design/Won.  Anybody here ever successfully accomplish this?
