Opatch Auto For PSU Patching

We have Oracle 11.2.0.3 GI home and 11.2.0.3 Oracle database home. The April 2013 PSU 11.2.0.3.6 Patch Installation instructions (2.4 of the document 15966967)  directs us to use opatch auto. How does opatch know the database home if its run as root from the GI home ?
