ORA-00020

Recenlty, our database went to Idle mode by itself when I check the v$instance.  It means to me it crashed.

After investigation, so far, I only see ORA-00020: maximum number of processes xxx exceeded in the trace log.  I wonder if exceeding the maximum would ever crash a database?
