Error Message recieved when attempting to change a customer address in the customer html form

In R12, I received the error message below when attempting to change a customer address in the customer html form. Can someone please explain what this mean? and what needs to be done so i can change the address? Thanks in advance

Update of this column is not allowed because Printed, Posted, or Applied Transaction(s) exists for one of the sites for this address. Please requery the address to undo the changes and then create a new address.
