dataguard archives

Hello All
we've configured succesfully a pair of dataguards (no broker)
we have a problem: when an archive backup 'runs' on primary, it deletes archives that are not applied over standby yet
we know that the  expected behavour is that archives note yet applied are backed up but not deleted
what it is misconf ??
