Access Profiles

We have a particular access profile that has read/edit access levels for contacts. This profile has been attached to one of our roles. The problem is, the users who have these roles have the ability to delete. How can I change this? I do not want this role to have the delete ability. I thought the access level of read/edit would prevent this.
