Project Costing and Asset Managment Project Issue

We do not currently integrate Projects into Asset Management but we do want to use the Project Business Unit and the Project fields under the asset acquisition detail to associate assets we create with the Projects that they derived from.  Our current process is to create the asset and close the project.  Once the project is closed it goes an inactive status.  We discovered that if we then try to transfer the asset containg the closed & inactive project number we get an error message  "The value "xxxxxx" for the field "Project" is not effective for the accounting date.
