Oracle INV (r12) Item Mapping

 Hello,
I am facing a problem regarding items in Inventory. We are planning to change the convention of our item coding.
The value set is defined as 6-digit code, but we need to increase this length to 10-digit, as we have established some logic to the coding.
However, we have an organization that has been using for years this 6-digit coding.
Is there any way to map this old items (6-digit) to the new ones (10-digit) so that the system for the past and future transactions go straight to the 10-digit item code?
