Item Description on PO LIne

Hi

           At the time of Creating a PO, the Item Description defaults from the Item definitions onto PO Lines.  The Item Description can be changed on the PO Lines and is stored at PO_LINES.ITEM_DESCRIPTION

Is this the intended functionality, to have item description as different between PO (and hence, multiple PO's) and Item definition?
