Database connections severed with RMAN running backup

Hello - mutiple platforms (SPARC and SLES), Enterprise 11.2.0.3. We are experiencing occasional issues where our database connections are broken and causes some of our processes to crash. This seems to happen when RMAN is running. We moved our backup time to test this, and sure enough the issue followed the time change. We also see OEM having issues connecting to the database at the same time. Do you think this directly related to a resouce issue? Below are pertinent messages in the alert log:

ORA-00445: background process "m000" did not start after 120 seconds
ORA-00445: background process "J000" did not start after 120 seconds
