R12 patch via ADPATCH indicates environments issues

12.1.1

When trying to start 'adpatch' utility, the utility spews out an error message about the current environment & then stops.

Message is:  "Your current Applications top directory does not match that of the configuration file. Please check that your environment is correct."

Message gives no indication of what the Applications top directory value is set to (I'm assuming it means the $APPL_TOP env variable) and no indication of what configuration file it is using to compare against the APPL_TOP env (or the path to this unknown config file).

I believe I have my R12 env set (mostly) correct, but the output of this utility is so poor I can't debug anything & have to resort to opening an SR.  I'm sure it's an environment problem but at a loss as to where to start.
