Questions on CPU ( critical patch update ) vs PSU ( Patch set update )vs SPU ( security Patch update

Hi,
1) what is the different between CPU ( ciritcal patch update ) vs PSU ( patch setu update ) and SPU ( security patch update) ?
2) in the past, we follow CPUJAN2012 to apply CPU patch into 10.2.0.4.  I heard that if we ever applied CPU patch before, we should continue to aply CPU patch not the SPU.  Is that correct?
3), since we plan to upgrade to 10.2.0.5.x then apply any ciritcal patch.  Does it mean, under a new version of RDBM, we can apply either PSU or SPU?
