Adding Disks to ASM diskgroups on VMWare or OVM

  We have a two node RAC/ASM 11.2.0.3 built on VMWare.  The os is RHEL 6 with VMFS.
The problem we  face right now is to add disks to ASM diskgroups where each node needs to be rebooted in order to make the disks visible to the node.  We were told by system admin that this is required due to  a shared "flag" has to be checked off in order to make the disks to be shared, and requires the VM node reboot.  The VMWare support also confirmed that  'the virtual machine must be powered off in order to set the “shared” flag on the ASM virtual disks'
