Hiding Asset Number

I am trying to hide or make the Asset Number field, not enterable in the Enter Asset Details screen.  I can hide it on the Quick Additions screen, but when I do that on the Asset Details screen, I get an error message in the forms that states the Asset Number field can not be hidden because the cursor is in that field.  When I try to make it not enterable, it does not take affect. 

Any ideas what I am doing wrong???
