Change of values in the picklists

Dear All,
I have a requirement where I need to change the value of the picklist from one value to the other.Now here I have 2 doubts:

Doubt 1:If I replace the older value to the new values directly in the picklist then what will be the effect in the report.Will I find the values for the older values as unspecified or blank.

Doubt 2:If I disable the old value and create a new value in the picklist, then what will be the effect in the report.
