Need help with archiving info for manual dataguard

Win 2008, oracle 10.2.0.4 standard edition
Hi Experts,
Recntly i changed the value of archive_lag_target from 0 to 3600.
My aim was to generate archive every 1 hour and backup it to external disk. SInce we are using standard edition, i was trying to setup Manual Dataguard.
My question is:
Instead of setting the value of archive_lag_target, can i schedule a script which would archive and then copy these archives to external disk every hour.
I tried alter system archive log current; to generate the archive. Is this the correct statement or do i need to use the below statements:
alter system archive log all;
